It's a gorgeous necklace from White Owl. I find this peacock necklace to be quite fetch. [Gretchen, stop trying to make "fetch" happen. It's not gonna happen!"] Hop on other to see how to enter and win!
On a different note - this doesn't really involve design or anything - but you should check out this awesome video onhow viruses infiltrate our bodies from NPR. Love the narration and the animation is pretty fascinating.
I'm super stoked today because I got some link love over on Love.Obsess.Inspire. So to any of you who came to visit from over yonder, a big hello!
Today, I've been particularly inspired by spaces. These ones in particular:
Via design crisis, there's this little farmhouse in the Catskills. Check out the rest of the space by following the link, but this room had my mind reeling. I love it and am put off by it at the same time. I love the bright-yellow spaces on the walls. I love that stove. I love that there's a bed crammed in the corner, and I love that chair, even though there's something medieval-torture-chambery about it to me. Something I don't like? Those mirrors. They make me shiver. I don't know why. I suppose I don't like reflective surfaces in calming spaces, maybe.
This and the next photo (from desire to inspire) I think I'm drawn to because of the stairs. I'm fascinated by stairways, particularly odd, modern stairways. I love the lines in this photograph. I love that there's a bookshelf, and I like that I'm peeking into a completely different space full of life up above.
Here again - stairs, books, and wood. Did I mention I'm crazy about wood? It's probably due to my being brought up with a mom obsessed with antiques and an appreciation for expertly-crafted Amish furniture. That chair is blowing my mind and poking at my deepest nightmares, but I love it. I love the weird symmetry of the stairs, too. See what I mean? Wowza.
Oh, so check this out.
MORE STAIRS! But not just any stairs, EMO-RAINBOW stairs via notcot! They have the best stuff over in Europe, I swear. I wish I knew more German so I could decipher which emotion belonged to which color, etc. Speaking of inspiring stairs I want to climb, have you seen those awesome Swedish piano stairs? I mentioned them in this post a bit ago.
Lastly, what do ya'll think about this? I like Imogen Heap somewhat, but I have mixed feelings about it. Makes you view the lyrics and purpose of the song differently, eh? Tell me what you think, por favor!
Some really cool stuff up today, y'all. Today's theme is LINES.
First up is something from design for mankind a couple weeks back, a video titled "This is For Reels." Check out the website. Pretty mindblowing, IMO.
Next, via boing boing, is this crazy-cool map from National Geographic, detailing 50 years of space exploration. It shows the trajectories of our favorite spacecraft, their orbits, points of interest, and current locations. This is totally sweet!
Next is the amazing talent of Yulia Brodskaya, a ... paper-crafter, I guess? She recently did some work for Neiman Marcus' Christmas Book. You have to check out her portfolio (follow the link on her name), there is some siiiick work in there.
Ok, since I slacked yesterday, I'm going to share something with you that I discovered like 5 minutes ago and it's BLOWING MY MINDZ!!!
It's the illustration of Natalie Perkins. I am so wildly inspired right now, it's insane. Too bad it will vanquish in 15 minutes when I go into one of my moods.
Here are some of my absolute faves from her portfolio. *edit: I had some of my faves, but the links broke :(, so here's my fave! And you ABSOLUTELY MUST GO TO HER PORTFOLIO!*
Is your mind blown? I think I got lady-wood about... 4 times. Yeah, 4. (via design work life)
Next up is the illustration/animation/brilliance of James Gulliver Hancock. Check out this sick video.
Wow, there was so much brilliance in this post, I don't think I'll ever have to do this again.
Laterrr!!!
*edit - I just made an improvement to the blog. Now you can see the whole box when viewing youtube vids! (easy fix, dunno why I didn't fix it before...)
Check out the flickr photostream for more photos of other zany cosplayers - there are some really impressive ones, including X-Men and Daria.
Next, also via Boingboing, is a collection of nude Alice in Wonderland illustrations. I haven't had an opportunity to see these, so your guess is as good as mine as to how raunchy they are.
Some uber cool, trippy, surreal stuff's gonna be featured today (not unlike any other day, I guess.) I hope the seat you're in is firmly planted in reality. Bolted down, perhaps?
First up is English illustrator,Iain Macarthur. I'm pretty nuts for his style. Very unique and creepy. Love the embellishments of color most of all.
Last is this INSANE pod house from over on Apartment Theapy: Boston. I could totally live there. It would be a great place to throw parties. What do you think?
Be sure to follow the link to check out the cool interior!
There was some crazy good stuff storing up in my reader over the weekend, so get ready for some awesome posts this week!
First up is the Piano Stairs video, which I realize everyone has probably seen by now as it is taking over the blogosphere, but I figured I'd post it on here real quick before it becomes totally old news.
Next I'd like to inform you of this awesome giveaway!
Next, I'd like to feature the art of Sakke Soini on the Behance network. I love this style of art, and this guy does it really well. Love the electronicats!
First up is this cool typographic activity thing I've been seeing around the blogosphere, Bokeh Type. This entertained me for quite a while yesterday. (via designworklife) Next is this photo. Not sure where it came from, but there's something about that guy that intrigues me to no end. He looks a little young, but I still wanna know him. Even if that makes me a cougar. (I'm more like a cougar cub.)
It wasn't until after uploading the image that I got the "Dorian Gray" reference. Shows how easily distracted I am when it comes to pretty boys in top hats.
Next is Beardfolio, which made me happy in unexpected ways. I admire these men and their commitment to excessive facial hair.
Since I neglected to update yesterday, I bet you're expecting something awesome, hmm? Well, whatever. I guess we'll have to see.
First up is Lulu's. They have some seriously awesome clothing, and a fair amount to offer in their "sale" section, which I'm a fan of. Haven't bought anything from there, but I've definitely ogled a fair amount of their merchandise. Design for Mankind is currently running a giveaway for a $100 credit to the store, so check it ouuuutt! I know what I'd spring for if I won - an awesome pair of boots and a dress! The problem is deciding which ones...
Next up is this hilariously awesome card case. I like to think I'm a "skillionaire."
Next is the work of Nikki Farquharson. I totally dig the colors, style, and mixed media-ness of her work. She's so smart in her arrangement of the media, too. Here are some of my favorites:
*edit - the images I had are broken and "forbidden," so you'll just have to click the link!*
Anyway, here's what's up for today: HELLO KITTY 35th ANNIVERSARY PROMO VIDEO!!! It's cute, adorable, and satisfyingly Japanese. (via notcot)
Next is the portfolio of Michael Sanderson. He's created illustrations/advertisements for The New Yorker, Calvin Klein, and Marc Jacobs. Check out his portfolio! I think he's made some pretty unique stuff. (via designworklife)
*MICHAEL JACKSON SPOILER ALERT*
Ever wonder how he managed to lean at a gravitationally impossible 45-degree angle while dancing? Here's the youtube video where he performs it live ... it happens at 4:28 if you're don't want to sit through the whole video, even though it's awesome!
